Car Insurance – Hybrid Cars; Part 2

Continued from part one; “car insurance – Hybrid cars”

In the first part of this article we examined the hybrid car, looking at what the system is composed of, the way the separate components work and how it achieves its brilliant fuel economy. We will now look at other ways in which the hybrid car improves its efficiency and the running costs incurred with this type of car.

One area where a noticeable difference can be made is aero-dynamics. A lot of the engines work is place into pushing the car through the air and the resistance it encounters (known as aerodynamic drag). One way this can be reduced is by reducing the frontal area of the car, the smaller this surface the less the drag effect, thus saving on fuel. In general any object that projects from the body of the car will produce some drag, you will usually find that this has been carefully thought through on hybrid cars. Some manufacturers have removed wing mirrors in favour of cameras to reduce potential drag.

Other way’s in which manufacturers seek to reduce fuel consumption are as follows: we all know that tyres encounter friction from the road surface; they are after all designed to allow the vehicle to apply its power to the road surface and hold the car steady when in certain driving conditions whilst retaining a smooth ride.

Here the hybrid car manufacturer has designed tyres that are more rigid and reinforced and inflated to a higher pressure to substantially decrease drag.

Of course one simple way to reduce fuel consumption in any car is to decrease the weight, this is done in hybrid cars by using materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium which are much lighter than traditionally used construction materials and just as strong. A lighter car expends much less energy when climbing a hill or accelerating as it has much less mass to effectively pull around.

If we take a look at the new Peugeot 308 hybrid which uses a 1.6 litre engine (a first in the hybrid market) we see that it returns an incredible 83 miles per gallon fuel in terms of combined fuel consumption. Carbon dioxide production is a tiny 90 grams per kilometre meaning that it is currently tax exempt under European guidelines as is any car which emits less than 100g/km.

The vehicle uses a 1.6 litre HDI engine which utilises a high pressure direct injection system which in practical terms means it is much more efficient than diesel engines of ancient. This is tuned to give an output of 110 brake horse power and the addition of the electrical motor delivers an additional 22 bhp.

The electrical motor powers the car from starting and continues to solely power the vehicle at low speeds. For motorway and non urban driving the diesel engine system is started and becomes the sole propulsion system. If extra acceleration is required both units operate at once providing maximum power when it is most needed.

As with most parallel hybrid systems the battery is recharched by utilising the kinectic energy normally wasted in braking. When light braking is required the battery is charged if more definitive braking is required the vehicles hydraulic system is used to give maximum braking efficiency.

As you can imagine, car insurance for this vehicle will probably be very reasonable as it not only has very low emissions but is fitted with a host of safety features that the majority of modern cars benefit from.

As you can imagine the hybrid car returns double the fuel efficiency in most cases of a standard petrol engine meaning your fuel costs are halved. You can expect to pay small or no tax depending on emissions; your motor insurance will undoubtedly be much cheaper and you will save a huge amount of money on general running costs. On average the hybrid car will be more expensive to buy but you will quickly regain this initial extra outlay in the amount you save running it. Who can say that doing your bit for the environment doesn’t make you smile?

PHARMACOKINETIC STUDY OF CYCLIC GLYCOLAMIDE ESTER CONJUGATES OF NIFLUMIC ACID

ABSTRACT:

A simple synthetic route for the preparation of glycolamide ester conjugates of Niflumic acid is exploited and prepared 2-(???-trifluro-m toluidino) nicotinyl glycolamide esters in excellent yields and their structures were confirmed by various spectral data.Preliminary evaluation of physicochemical and in vitro reversion properties of various prodrugs is studied which includes solubility, lipophilicity, chemical hydrolysis, pH-hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis, and stability study. Compounds 3, 10, 13, 14 showed solubility increased by 50 to 100 folds, compounds 4 to 7 showed solubility increased by 20 to 35 folds, compounds 8, 9, 11 and 12 showed least solubility than parent drugs indicating in general cyclic glycolamide esters are least soluble compounds in 50 mM phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 except 10 and 13. Similarly compound 3-7 and 14 showed lipophilicity more than 1 and cyclic glycolamide esters showed lesser lipophilicity except compound 10 and 11. These esters were reasonably stable in 50 mM Phosphate buffer, half lives being 0.29–3.23 h among all compounds 6 and 9 showed maximum stability, half lives being 3.23 and 2.33 h respectively. In general cyclic glycolamide esters having six membered ring found to be more stable. Compound 6 and 9 were subjected to hydrolytic studies over pH range 1.2 – 9.0 at 70?C and they showed maximum stability at pH 4.6 and pH 5.0 respectively. At pH 4.6 compound 6 and 9 showed shelf life of 1.37 h and 4.33 h at 20?C as determined from accelerated studies using Arrehenius equation. The glycolamide ester derivatives were quantitatively converted into Niflumic acid very rapidly in human plasma at 37°C and pH 7.4 except compound 8. Comparison with chemical stability data, the intrinsic reactivity of esters has no effect on their enzymatic reactivity. The results from these evaluations demonstrate that the derivatives examined have many of the ideal properties required for potential useful prodrug.

Key words: Niflumic acid, glycolamide ester, hydrolysis study, prodrug.

INTRODUCTION:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) have differing modes of inhibitory activities, with the arachidonic acid cascades, at the level of cycloxygenase. Inhibition of this enzyme at the micromolar concentration by NSAID’s prevents the formation of thromboxanes, prostaglandins and prostacyclins and as a consequence potent anti-inflammatory activity occurs1. NSAID’s due to carboxylic acid function passes into cells of stomach mucosa. The intracellular pH of cells is more basic than that of stomach lumen and NSAID’s become ionized, this results in reverse flow of H+ ions into the cells causing cellular damage2. The direct contact mechanism appears to play a determinant role in the production of gastrointestinal lesions and it is probably a combination of local irritation produced by the free carboxylic acid group of NSAID’s and local inhibition of cytoprotective action of prostaglandines on gastric mucosa. The considerable gastrointestinal distress associated with chronic use of these compounds and their low half-life constitute the main disadvantages in clinical use of NSAID’s3.

Niflumic acid (1) is one of the newly developed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent which act as cycloxygenase I inhibitor, indicated in various inflammatory and rheumatic conditions4. In order to supress the gastrointestinal irritation produced by Niflumic acid which is believed to caused mainly by direct contact of acidic group with gastrointestinal mucosa, an alternative approach is to use the promising prodrug concept to mask the carboxylic acid function5.

An ideal prodrug retains the activity of the parent drug while unwanted side effects are eliminated or notably reduced6, to achieve such a pharmacological profile a prodrug should exhibit optimum physicochemical properties. The prodrug should show a excellent stability in aqueous solutions and in gastrointestinal fluid, it should have suitable water solubility and lipophilicity to ensure absorption by the oral route and it should be readily hydrolysed following gastric absorption to release the parent drug. Since simple alkyl and aryl ester prodrugs donot show the requirements mentioned above as they are not sufficiently labile in vivo to ensure a high rate of prodrug conversion3.

To attempt a new generally ester prodrug types possessing a high enzymatic rate of hydrolysis in plasma or in GIT wall due to esterase enzyme, we recognized the esters of certain 2-hydroxyacetamide (glycolamide) which are chemically highly stable7. The glycolamide ester structure combined with the presence of two substituents on the amide nitrogen atom, such as N,N disubstituted glycolamide esters are found be promising biolabile prodrug8.

The conversion of carboxyl group to glycolamide doesn’t negatively modify the anti-inflammatory activity of synthesized prodrugs of Niflumic acid in vivo, because, the cleavage of glycolamide linkages take place by amide hydrolysing enzymes present in various tissues as well as in plasma9. But it depends on release of Niflumic acid from prodrug.

In the novelty of present work is evaluation of a number of glycolamide esters of Niflumic acid, as potential prodrugs with respect to their solubility, lipophilicity, chemical hydrolysis, pH-hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis and stability study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Substituted 2-chloracetamides required for the synthesis of glycolamide esters of Niflumic acid were prepared according to reported methods10. Chemicals used for the synthesis of various 2-chloroacetamides are obtained from S. D. Fine – Chem Ltd., Mumbai, India. Reagents used for the preparation of the buffers were of analytical grade. Fresh triple distilled water from all glass apparatus was used in the preparation of all the solutions, mobile phase was prepared from HPLC grade methanol obtained from Ranbaxy Fine Chemicals Ltd, S.A.S Nagar, 160055, India. Human plasma was procured from the Mitra Industries Ltd., Haryana, India.

General method for preparation of glycolamide esters of Niflumic acid 3-14.

To a solution of the 2.82 g of Niflumic acid (0.01 mol) in 10ml of N,N dimethylformamide was added 1.52 ml triethylamine (0.011 mol), 0.149 g sodium iodide (0.001 mol) and appropriate 2-chloroactamide (0.011 mol). The mixture was stirred at 90°C for 2 hrs or in some cases stirred at room temperature overnight, poured into water (50 ml) and then extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 ml). The combined extract were washed with a 2% aqueous solution of sodium thiosulphate, 2% sodium bicarbonate and water. After drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate, ethyl acetate was removed under reduced pressure to give the glycolamide esters which were purified by column chromatography.

HPLC procedure for the analysis of ester prodrugs of Niflumic acid.

The various physicochemical parameters of glycolamide ester prodrugs of Niflumic acid were determined by isocratic reversed phase HPLC procedures using a Milton Roy CDC analytical multiple solvent delivery system with UV variable wavelength detector. A 20 µl loop injection valve and 18 sphereimage OD 52, 5µM, 250 x 4.6 mm C.S chromatography. All solvents were of HPLC grade. The parent drug and the prodrug were subjected to HPLC and retention time was noted down for all the compounds using methanol as a solvent, and was eluted with methanol. The flow column effluent was monitored at 290nm. Quantification of the compounds was carried out by measuring the peak areas or peak heights in relation to those of standards chromatographed under the same conditions.

Determination of solubility

The solubility of prodrugs 3-14 was determined in 50 mM phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 at 25°C. Excess amount of the powdered prodrug was added to 2-5 ml of the buffer in the screw capped test tubes. The suspension was vortexed for 10 min and kept in a shaking incubator maintained at 25°C for 24 hrs. The suspension was transferred to a 10 ml glass syringe maintained at 25°C and filtered through a 0.45µm membrane filter in a warm test tube. After appropriate dilutions in methanol, 20 µl of the solution was injected for HPLC analysis. The concentration of the compound was calculated from standard plot obtained on the same day under similar conditions.

Determination of lipophilicity

The apparent partition coefficient (P) of the ester derivatives of Niflumic acid were determined in octanol-buffer system at 25°C. The aqueous phase was a 50 mM Phosphate buffer of pH 7.4. The buffer solution and octanol were mutually saturated before use. The traditional shake flask method11 was used, and concentrations were determined by HPLC to afford rapid evaluation and buffer reliability12-13. The compounds were dissolved in octanol (2ml) in 10 ml screw-capped test tube. After addition of buffer (5ml), two phases were mixed on shaking waterbath maintained at 25°C for 8 h. The tubes were centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 30 min. The octanol layer (1ml) was removed and properly diluted. Then injected into the HPLC column and the peak area was measured (AUCoct). The buffer solution was also removed and properly diluted, 20µl of this solution was injected and corresponding peak area was obtained (AUC buffer). The partition coefficient (P) was determined from the following expression.

P = (AUC oct/AUC buffer) x dilution factor (1)

The lipophilicity of these prodrug derivatives was also evaluated by means of reversed phase HPLC. In this method, the capacity factor (k’)14 of a solute was taken as a measure of the relative lipophilicity and was calculated as;

k’ = (tR-tO) / tO (2)

Where tR is the retention time of the solute and tO denotes elution time of the solvent. The k’ values were determined using methanol as a mobile phase. The flow rate was maintained at 1.2ml/min and column effluent was monitored at 290 nm.

Determination of chemical hydrolysis

Chemical hydrolysis of ester produrgs of Niflumic acid was studied under near physiological conditions at pH 7.4 in 50 mM phosphate buffer at 37°C. The reaction was initiated by adding 50-100 µl of stock solution (in methanol) of the ester to 20 ml of preheated buffer solution in screw capped test tubes. The final concentration of the compounds was in the range of 1.8 x 10-6 – 2.0 x 10-5 M. The solutions were kept in a water bath at constant temperature and at appropriate intervals samples were withdrawn and chromatographed. Pseudo first order rate constants for the hydrolysis of the derivatives were determined from the slopes of linear plots of the logarithms of residual derivative against time.

The pH hydrolysis of 6 and 9 was determined over the pH range 1.2 – 9.0 to determine the pH of maximum stability. The buffers used were hydrochloric acid, acetate, phosphate and carbonate buffers. A constant ionic strength of 0.5 was maintained for each buffer by adding a calculated amount of potassium chloride. Temperature accelerated studies for the same esters 6 and 9 were also performed at 80-90°C at pH of high stability to predict the shelf life at 20°C.

Determination of enzymatic hydrolysis

The enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester prodrugs of Niflumic acid having solubility of more than 5µg/ml was studied in human plasma diluted to 80% with 50 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 at 37°C. The reaction was initiated by adding 20-50 µl of the stock solution of ester in methanol to 2-5 ml of preheated plasma being 4.2 x 10-5 – 1 x 10-4 M. The solution was kept in waterbath at 37°C. At appropriate time intervals samples of 100-250 µl were withdrawn and added to 1000-5000 µl of cold methanol in order to deproteinize the plasma. After immediate mixing and centrifugation for 5 min at 7000 rpm, 20 µl of the clear supernant was analyzed by HPLC for remaining ester prodrugs and the values of rate constants and half lives were calculated as described above.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

Solubility and lipophilicity evaluation

It is recognized that the solubility and lipophilicity play an vital role in governing the overall biological performance of drugs. For oral administration of drug it is mentioned that the drugs having octanol – water partition coefficient log P ? 2 are well absorbed provided they have minimum solubility of 10µg/ml15. To assess this potential, the solubility of the ester prodrugs 3-14 was determined in 50 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 (25°C). The values are listed in Table I.

Compounds 3,10,13,14 showed solubility increased by 50 to 100 folds, compounds 4 to 7 showed solubility increased by 20 to 35 folds and compounds 8, 9, 11 and 12 showed least solubility than parent drug indicating in general cyclic glycolamide esters are least soluble compounds in 50 mM phosphate buffer of pH 7.4. The apparent partition coefficient (P) were determined between octanol and 50mM phosphate buffer of pH 7.4. The log P values obtained are listed in Table I. Compound 3 to 7 and 14 showed lipophilicy (log p) more than 1 and cyclic glycolamide esters showed lesser lipophilicity except compounds 10 and 11.

The lipophilicity of the ester derivatives was also evaluated by means of reversed phase HPLC capacity factor (k’) in methanol as mobile phase. The k’ values are listed in Table I. As has been observed with many different types of compounds a linear relationship existed between log k’ and log P16-17.

log P=5.063 log k’ + 3.7632 (3)

This relationship would very likely allow extrapolation to other esters in the series. So majority of compounds possess minimum physiochemical properties required for oral absorption.

Chemical hydrolysis Evaluation

Prodrug derivatives should be sufficiently stable so that they can be formulated in a stable dosage form. To assess stability, hydrolysis of the ester derivatives 3 to 14 was studied in 50 mM phosphate buffer of pH 7.4 at 37°C. The degradation of glycolamide ester prodrugs showed strict pseudo first order kinetics over several half lives. Figure 1 and Figure 2 represents pseudo first order cleavage of 3 to 7 and 8 to 12 respectively. For all the compounds parent Niflumic acid was found in stoichiometric amounts.

The pseudo first order rate constants and half lives observed for hydrolysis at pH 7.4 and 37°C are listed in Table II. It can be seen from Table II that these esters were reasonably stable in 50 mM phosphate buffer, half lives being 0.29-3.23 h, among all compounds 6 and 9 showed maximum stability, half lives being 3.23 and 2.33 h respectively. In general cyclic glycolamide esters having six membered ring found to be more stable. The lower reactivity of N,N disubstituted glycolamide ester prodrugs compared to N-monosubstituted glycolamide esters may be due to increased steric hinderance to nucleophile OH- in the case of former. Among the disubstitued and cyclic derivatives compound 6 and 9 showed maximum stability. The stability of compounds 6 and 9 was further investigated over the pH range 1.2 – 9.0 at 70° to evaluate the effect of pH on degradation rate and to determine the pH of maximum stability.

The influence of pH on the rate of hydrolysis of 6 and 9 at 70°C is shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4 respectively, in which the logarithms of the observed pseudo first order rate constants (k) are plotted against pH. The U shaped pH rate profile indicates the occurance of specific acid catalysed (KH), neutral or water catalyzed (KO) and specific base catalyzed (KOH) processes according to the following rate expression.

Kobs = KH a H + KO + KOH a OH (4)

Where aH and aOH are the hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion activities respectively at reaction temperature18. The later was calculated from the measured pH at 70°C according to the equation.

log a OH = pH – 12.82 (70°C) (5)

Values of the second order rate constants KH and KOH were determined from the straight line parts of the pH rate profile at low and high pH values after adjusting the slope to –1 and +1 respectively. The values for the first order rate constant for spontaneous hydrolysis (KO) was obtained from Equation 4. In Figure 3 and Figure 4 the points shown are the log Kobs values and the solid curve is constructed from the derived rate constants using Equation 4.

The pH where the rate of hydrolysis is minimum (pH min) was found by differentiating Equation 4 and setting the derivative equal to zero. The pH min and values for rate constants at 70°C are given below

KH = 05.90 M-1h-1 (for compound 6)

KOH = 35.40 M-1h-1 (for compound 6)

pHmin= 4.66 (for compound 6)

KH = 01.28 M-1h-1 (for compound 9)

KOH = 14.90 M-1h-1 (for compound 9)

pHmin= 5.00 (for compound 9)

KO = 0.074 h-1

The effect of temperature (80-90°C) on rate of hydrolysis of 6 and 9 was also studied at pH 4.6 (stable range) to determine shelf life of the compound at 20°C. The rate constant obtained at different temperatures were plotted according to Arrhenius equation19.

log k = log A – Ea/2.303 RT (6)

Where ‘Ea’ is the energy of activation, ‘A’ denotes the frequency factor, ‘R’ is gas constant and ‘T’ represents absolute temperature.

On the basis of Equation 6, shelf life of 6 and 9 was found to be 1.37 h and 4.33 h at 20°C respectively.

Enzymatic hydrolysis evaluation

In order to be useful as prodrugs of Niflumic acid, the ester derivatives should be readily converted to parent drug in vivo. To assess the bioavailability the hydrolysis of ester prodrugs of Niflumic acid was studied in 80% human plasma pH 7.4 at 37°C. The progress of hydrolysis of all ester followed strict first order kinects over several half lives as illustrated in Figure 5 and Figure 6 for ester prodrugs 3 to 7 and 8 to 12 respectively.

The half lives and pseudo first order rate constants are given in Table II. Under the conditions all esters were quantitatively hydrolyzed to Niflumic acid as revealed by HPLC analysis. The glycolamide ester derivatives are quantitatively converted into Niflumic acid very rapidly in human plasma at 37°C and pH 7.4 except compound 8. Comparison with chemical stability data, the intrinsic reactivity of ester has no effect on their enzymatic reactivity. The rapid rate of hydrolysis observed in plasma is vital in view of the slow rate of hydrolysis in the absence of plasma under similar conditions in buffer solutions of pH 7.4 at 37°C.

CONCLUSION:

Preparation of glycolamide esters of Niflumic acid was achieved in excellent yields by a simple synthetic route, various in-vitro experiments were carried out to evaluate glycolamide esters of Niflumic acid as a potential prodrugs. They are chemically stable to be presented in a proper dosage form, at the same time they get rapidly cleaved to parent drug Niflumic acid in 80% human plasma. Compounds 3,10,13,14 showed solubility increased by 50 to 100 folds and compounds 4 to 7 showed solubility increased by 20 to 35 folds than parent drug. Similarly compounds 3 to 7 and 14 showed lipophilicity more that 1 and cyclic glycolamide esters showed lesser lipophilicity except compounds 10 and 11. So majority of compounds showed optimum physiochemical properties required for oral absorption. These prodrugs are stable at gastric pH, so they possess the potential to avoid Niflumic acid mediated direct gastric hurt while maintaining their efficacy via the systemic action of active metabolite Niflumic acid. It is concluded that esterification of Niflumic acid with substituted acetamide is useful in improving physiochemical properties as potential prodrugs, but further modification of these molecules required to achieve better solubility, shelf life, chemical stability, lipophilicity and release of more Niflumic acid from prodrugs.

Replaced my Elite, extremely pleased with my new toy

I am extremely picky about any hardware I use. Having owned both models of the PS3 and a few Xbox 360s (that I bought and sold over time) I have pretty high expectations. Personally I reckon Xbox live is much better then PSN which is why I jumped from PS3 back to Xbox. My huge issue was the hardware. Microsoft took care of a huge issue by allowing users to burn their games to the hard drive. But, the fan noise on my Xbox Elite was still driving me crazy. Now my Elite wasn’t broken, my ears just seem to attune to the noise they make. It especially drove me crazy when playing games like Puzzle Quest or when browsing the dash board. In this case the PS3 stout and slim where hands down superior (hardware build wise). But like many a fans I place up with the crappy build quality for the sake of a better interface and of course my friends list.

Now onto the new Xbox 360. Let me just say that for once I am very proud of Microsoft. They seem to have taken all the complaints from users and fixed them. This is the system they should have released long ago. The very first thing I noticed is how silent this machine is. Even after running for over an hour you can barely hear the fan. I would go as far as to say it’s even more silent then the PS3 slim (which I found to be louder then the stout model). The new Xbox has a weird but cool new look. I don’t know why people are complaining that it is a finger print magnet. How often do you really touch your system once it’s in place? The buttons on the front are now touch sensitive instead of pressing them in, and make a cool noise I must say. I’m pleased to say that even my disc drive is quite. It’s nearly as quite running a disc as the fans on my Elite were. There are no ancient school memory card ports, but they upped the USB ports to 5. 2 on the front and 3 in the back. The new 250GB hard drive is removable. There is a button on the right side vent that you can press and remove the plate. The hard drive is in a special case but it’s simpler to go. The only downside to this is the people that take their hard drives to their friends house, but this can be fixed by using a USB drive now.

The controller is pretty much the same as the Elites plus a couple changes. The bottom part of the controller that was gray shaded is now a shiny black and the Xbox button is shiny chrome. All in all goes will with the package. The ear cushion on the headset is also now black instead of grey. Microsoft also has a picture of a black chat pad and wireless headset on the box for the new 360. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a black controller charger.

To close, I’m extremely satisfied with my buy. It’s a worthy upgrade and one that shows Microsoft is really listening for once. Also for those plotting to get Kinect there is a dedicated port so on the new system which will let you use the camera with one less cable.

Fantastic Updated Console – Simple Transfer

I really bought this today from Gamestop (not Amazon) but I feel posting a review here is appropriate anyway. The console is fantastic: very sleek new design, larger HD, built in N WiFi, etc. When they say its whisper silent they aren’t exaggerating, the thing is near silent.

The main purpose of this review is to let everyone know that as long as you have an authentic XBOX 360 Transfer Cable, transferring all of your content from your previous XBOX is a breeze. The transfer software is really built into the new XBOX 360 and doesn’t require you to insert a software disc. Just plug in your ancient harddrive to one end of the cable and plug the other end into a USB on the new console and the transfer process will initiate automatically.

I have all three consoles (360, PS3 and the Wii) and really like all of them; its a fantastic time to be into video games. This phenomenon of “fanboys” (both XBOX and PS3…and to a much lesser extent Wii) trolling the internet bashing the competition’s products is really obnoxious, detrimental to our leisure activity and gives gamers a terrible name. So if you see a 1-Star review of this console, or any console for that matter, read it carefully and take it with a grain of salt. Also keep in mind that this console technically hasn’t been released yet (my local Gamestop got theirs in a day early) so chances are the people doling out 1-Stars probably haven’t even gotten their hands on one.

Anyway, if you are thinking about upgrading, especially from a non-Elite unit, I say go for it. The latest iteration of the XBOX 360 is the best yet and should be loved by everyone.
I don’t own this product but….

Blah blah blah, Bill Gates, blah blah blah, its so shiny!, blah blah blah, I don’t even have a TV.

I hope you loved my informative review of this product, which I do not own, nor have I even seen it in person. I’m just so incredible, that even the blabber that comes out of my mouth is worth wasting your time with this incredible insightful review that effectively does nothing but throw off the accuracy of the product rating system.

The new Xbox 360 slim

So it has been over 4 and a half years sins the first Xbox 360 was released, during that time, there have been new accessories, new ‘elite’ consoles, but inside, the console has remained the same…till now.

Microsoft has released their new Xbox 360 Slim, technically, it isn’t called the Xbox 360 slim, because its not an alternative for the older Xbox 360 models, it is their replacement, but, it is a catchy name, so it will probably stick around as its unofficial name.

The new ‘Xbox 360 slim’ has had a few changes made to it, for instance, the casing is a all new design, it no longer has a black matte end, but a glossy black end, and the case itself is smaller then that of the Xbox 360 and it also has an angular design. Another new design feature are the buttons, you no longer have to physically apply pressure on the buttons found on the new Xbox 360 as they are touch sensitive, and to make sure that you know it was pressed, the console even emits a small sound, this apply to both the power button and the tray button, which is now located onto of the console.

The new Xbox 360 slim has a 250 GB hard drive as standard, but the hard drive location is different to that of the ancient Xbox 360, the new placement is within the console itself, it is still removable, it is located behind a panel on the side of the Xbox 360. The new hard drive is not compatible with the older Xbox 360 models, but you can still transfer your information with a simple cable that you can buy from most game stores, and it is simple to do.

Another improvement on the Xbox 360 slim is that it now includes internal 802.11 b/g/n wifi connectivity, which Xbox 360 users buying this will be pleased about as they no longer have to buy the wireless dongle accessorie which costs around £40 and up.

The new Xbox 360 slim now has 5 USB ports, which is 2 more then the older Xbox 360 models. It has two on the front and three on the back, on the back of the Xbox 360 slim, it also has a AUX port which is specifically designed to be used with Microsofts new Kinect motion system.

Now to clarify what is new on the inside of the Xbox 360 slim. It has a new 45-nanometer chip design, which integrates the CPU and GPU, this means that it reduces energy consumption by as much as 50% in some cases, it also makes it run quieter. There isn’t much difference in processing power.

As many of you may know, the chipset has been a major problem with previous Xbox 360 models, but they have replaced it now. It is impossible for this console to get the RROD (as it doesn’t have any red leds in it, so as you can see, impossible), but this console runs allot cooler then is predecessors, this is partly due to the new chipset design, but also to the fact of the new fan, whilst the ancient Xbox 360s had 2 fans in the back of the console, the new Xbox 360 slim has 1 huge fan, which is much better positioned and is much more officiant. So combine the new cooler chipset with the new, ore officiant, fan, you know this will be one cool console.

a fantastic new feature of the free Xbox 360 slim is how silent it is. The ancient Xbox 360 models sounded like an airplane was getting ready to take off when it was loading a game or movie, but the new Xbox 360 runs silent, you will notice the difference straight away, and see what you have been putting up with.

A missing component on the new Xbox 360 is that it no longer has memory card slots on the front of the console, but the new update on the free Xbox 360 means that any USB device can be used as a memory device on the console, so you don’t really need the memory slots anymore.

So our conclusion, if you are looking to upgrade from your noisy, over heating older Xbox 360 models, then this is certainly for you. Microsoft have certainly delivered on this account, the Xbox 360 was due for an overhaul, and the new free Xbox 360 slim is the end product.

Nice console, but gets hot really quick.

I picked this up yesterday at GameStop and used it most of the day and must say it looks nice, is really, REALLY silent, but it gets really hot…much hotter than my ancient 360 Pro (60GB) and I don’t know if that is a excellent thing (i.e. it is displacing the heat and radiating the heat out of the console through the main vent on the top really, really well) or terrible (i.e. it is producing more heat than it is capable of displacing in a timely manner causing it to radiate so much heat). Even when just watching Netflix it is unusually warm. I’m concerned about the possibility of an RRoD (even though the new version of the 360 is not cable of showing a Red Ring in the event of a hardware failure).

Other than that, I like the new form factor, it is much smaller, but I don’t care for the piano black end…it is a finger print magnet. Sony got smart and dumped that end for the PS3 Slim, Microsoft should have never even considered it. The new power brick is much smaller but it is not rated for 220V (for all those who are overseas or might be going overseas you will need a transformer). The disc drive is silent and you can’t hear the fan either.

Really the only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is my concern for the heat this remake produces. I hope Microsoft place this system through rigorous testing. For all those upgrading, get the HDD transfer cable from Microsoft’s website, GameStop or here on Amazon to make the switch much less painful. Transferring 30GB worth of data took me about two hours, but re-downloading all that content would have taken much longer. You can also use a USB Flash drive too, but if you have a lot of content you will be making multiple transfers as the 360 will only allow you to go 16GB on a USB stick (I believe, someone right me if I am incorrect).

Fantastic buy, buy from Gamestop today to get it by the 19th!

I ordered from Gamestop but this is one hell of awesome! It has a very large HDD, comes built in with wifi, whisper silent etc.
It’s also Glossy Black as more and more entertainment centers are going clear glass or black/clear glass.

I don’t have it on me but at E3 it was pretty damn awesome.

This is of more value than the other 360s!

You might Reckon it’s the same thing, but it’s not.

Let me just start off by saying I was skeptical about this item. I already have an Xbox 360 so I figured I didn’t need to upgrade, but I did anyways and boy was I surprised.

First off, this console is considerably smaller than the previous Xbox 360s. The power button is touch sensitive, which I also thought was very cool. It comes with a 250 gb hard drive which is the largest out there but the hard drive itself is also considerably smaller than the other hard drives. It is also inside the console instead of outside. The built in WiFi works much better than the wireless adapters, I’ve had no lag so far and no connection issues whatsoever. Another fantastic characteristic of this is that it has 5 USB ports, 2 in the front and 3 in the back. One of my favorite things about this is that it is nearly silent. If the room is silent and you are more than 3 feet away you can’t hear it, which is spectacular compared to previous models.

Overall this console is a must have. It is well worth the 0.00.

This will go well with Kinect when it comes out this November.

Battery life to increase ten-fold

Laptop and mobile phone batteries could see a ten-fold boost in performance if a technology breakthrough from scientists in the US comes to fruition, says PC Pro.

According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, replacing conventional battery electrodes with ones coated with carbon nanotubes can drastically increase the power to weight ratio compared to conventional lithium-ion laptop batteries.

The scientists say the energy output for a given weight of this new electrode material was five times greater than for conventional capacitors, and the total power delivery rate was 10 times that of lithium-ion batteries.

MS Kinect goes beyond gaming

Games are only the starting point for interface-less technology, such as Microsoft’s body-sensing Project Natal, renamed Kinect, according to a company official dealing with advanced object recognition algorithms, states New Scientist.

Kinect, a set-top add-on for the Xbox 360 console, allows gamers to become the controller. But Jamie Shotton of Microsoft Research UK in Cambridge says: “Looking forward into the future, I expect to see it in other types of applications.”

While games provided the initial impetus for Kinect, Shotton is now interested in exploring other practical applications, such as hands-free access to patient files for surgeons, smoother presentation software, and intelligent monitoring systems.

California plans digital licence plates

California is being crippled by debt and the situation is so desperate it looks like state lawmakers are now considering a licence plate led recovery, writes Gizmag.

A bill proposed by Senator Curren D Price Jr, D-Inglewood, gives the Department of Motor Vehicles the authority to investigate emerging Digital Electronic Licence Plate technology. This would enable rear licence plates on vehicles to become message boards to show advertising or other images when the vehicle is stationary for periods longer than four seconds, such as at a stop light or in a traffic jam.

The senator argues the adoption of this emerging technology could bring significant benefits to the state and its taxpayers. The technology could also be used to broadcast critical real-time traffic and public information such as Amber alerts and emergency traffic updates to drivers.

Microsoft had plenty of hot game trailers to show off

Microsoft had plenty of hot game trailers to show off

Starting in November, Xbox 360 gamers will be able to drive a sports car, get fit, video babble with relatives, or even blaze up a alive movie, all after accepting to blow a controller.

While Microsoft had affluence of hot bold trailers to appearance off during its E3 presentation (Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach, for starters), Kinect was acutely the brilliant of the show, with Xbox advisers demonstrating a alternation of accessible titles accurately advised to yield advantage of the new accessory.

Among them was a bright adversary to Wii Fit: a exercise appellation alleged Your Shape: Exercise Evolved?that “scans” your physique into a basic gym and pairs you with your own agenda trainer, who guides you through a alternation of C1295 exercises. Of course, video babble via the Kinect camera will be addition key Xbox Live feature, including the adeptness to watch videos with your video babble ally or conduct over-the-Xbox video calls with Windows Live users.

Naturally, Microsoft has its own adaptation of Wii Sports on tap, with a bold alleged ¡ª you estimated it ¡ª Kinect Sports. It’s a apartment of full-body motion-control amateur including affluence of soccer, bowling, javelin, continued jump, table tennis and hurdles action.

Also demoed Monday was a appealing absorbing children’s bold alleged Kinectimals. During the demo, we watched as a small babe (yes, a absolute one) “played” with a basic tiger cub ¡ª “petting” the purring artful at first, afresh authoritative it sit, jump,VGP-BPS9/B circle about and play dead. “Where’s your jump rope?” questioned the girl, and the cub affably ran off and came aback with a jump braiding clenched in its jaws.

Wave afresh and you’ll alarm up a Kinect-specific interface, and afresh just say (for example) “Xbox, Zune” to browse your music, or “Xbox, Facebook” to see what your Facebook pals are up to VGP-BPS9/S . You’ll aswell be able to aces Netflix movies to beck or browse to a specific arena by bouncing your duke beyond the interface.

Saving the best for last, Microsoft appear that LucasArts is making a “Star Wars” appellation for Kinect slated for next year. A abrupt gameplay audience featured a gesture-controlled Jedi slashing hapless Stormtroopers, smashing Imperial ships with Force powers, and ¡ª oh yes ¡ª clashing lightsabers with Lord Vader himself. I’m so there.

Xbox360 – Kinect (Project Natal) the future of gaming?

Xbox Kinect is the name given to what was once known as Xbox 360 Project Natal. You might suggest that this is the next stage of how we interact with games. Although Wii can place their name to this type of emerging wireless interactivity Xbox have taken this technology one step beyond and have completely eradicated the need for a controller. Kinect is a stand alone device that plugs into the Xbox, it has 3 camera that detect motion as you wildly jump around. Also included will be voice recognition, something that has never been implemented in a device like this. No one is currently sure of the price but expect to pay in the region of £120 or 0 for this device as a standalone buy.

We have recently see Xbox Kinect being tested out by a list Hollywood stars, VIPs, and media from around the world at LA’s Galen Center. They were all treated to an exclusive 45-minute experience, which the company Cirque du Soleil spent over four months in development. Kinect can now be pre-orderd without price as previously mentioned.

Expect the games to be similar to what you might have experienced on the Wii. You will see a classic mix of sport games and other interactive games much seen with the Wii. It will be fascinating to see how this technology may or may not integrate into the core games like Halo, Call of duty and such. Will the hard core gamers be tempted by innovation to come home from work and run, jump around to play games or will it be back to the excellent ancient fashion way of button bashing? Anymore question, head over to epicfailgamer.com.

Kinect Review – Virtual Reality Technology or Just another Wii?

For those of you that don’t know, basically Microsoft’s Kinect motion control system for the Xbox 360 is an attachment that fits on any Xbox 360 system and turns your Xbox into a more sophisticated version of a Nintendo Wii. You don’t need a controller as Kinect includes a motorized camera and microphone alongside sensors that can map out reference points along your skeletal frame, putting you in the game.

When Kinect is released in November it will be released with basic family software like Kinect Sports and Kinect Joyride, which is the same as Wii sports and Wii Resort so as to be widely appealing to families I guess. Strangely you can buy these two games on Amazon already but the Kinect isn’t available until November 2010.

You can pre-order at www.kinectreview.org in the US but there aren’t any release dates as yet for the rest of the world.

So why should we replace our Wii’s with the Xbox Kinect system?

Being a Microsoft system, Xbox connects wirelessly to your computer assuming you are running Microsoft Windows and have wireless broadband. This makes the transference of pictures and movies possible. So if you download movies for example you can run them on the TV that the Xbox is attached to, which is usually the main TV in the household these days. So you don’t have to buy a video transmitter or have wires trailing across the floor to watch what’s on your computer on your TV.

The Xbox Kinect is more than just a family games console, after all you can do many things that you can’t do with the Wii. The graphics are better and the Hard Drive storage on the new Xbox is far superior to the Wii. There is no need for controllers so less battery and recharging cost. If you have a young family like me, you don’t have to worry about the kids misusing the controllers or dropping them in there juice.

Kinect does have voice recognition so if the kids are getting out of order and reality wrestling rather than virtual wrestling you can just shout ‘pause’ and Kinect will pause. Unfortunately this doesn’t generally work with the kids, well… not in my house anyway. There is no doubt your whole family will have a lot of fun with this system and it is taking interactive gaming to another level.

To be honest, Microsoft were lagging behind a bit recently in the games console world and it’s about time they stepped up to the plate and with Xbox Kinect, they have done exactly that in my opinion. Whether it has bugs or small minor problems remains to be seen and as with all these things, the proof is in the ongoing sales rather than the initial sales onslaught of inquisitive techno-holics who buy any new gadget released.

Personally, I reckon the boffins that invent these things are just finding more and more ways to make us jump around in our family rooms acting and looking very foolish indeed! But if it is getting us and our kids to exercise more it can only be a excellent thing.
